Are you a young adult feeling isolated and lost?

You are not alone…

The transition to adulthood can be a challenging one for many people. Young adults are asked to balance many things as they adjust to the responsibilities of independent living, changing social relationships, navigating today’s dating scene and working through their career. Life changes in some dramatic ways: adult friendships are hard and take time, the dating world is complicated and frustrating, and you are inundated with life updates on other people’s progress through various social media feeds. Not only does this period of change require an adjustment to your new environment, many young adults can also start to experience changing roles in their life. You might be thrust into the role of caregiver of an aging parent, start contemplating your future with your significant other, or even become a parent for the first time yourself. With these many changes and time of insecurity, young people can experience a variety of challenging symptoms ranging from depressive mood to increased anxiety and even new insecurities as you battle “imposter syndrome.”

Emerge Mental Health & College Counseling has professionals that understand this transition. Our counselors are familiar and experienced working with young adults navigating these often challenging times. Counseling can provide you the space and opportunity to open up and explore the new obstacles you are facing and the anxiety it may create. Our counselors are experienced with providing a non-judgmental space to create the necessary therapeutic relationship and assist you in your journey. Counselors help encourage emerging adults to reflect on the life experiences that have shaped them up to this point and identify the needed skills to continue growing and developing. We hope to empower young professionals to feel confident in the goals that they have set for themselves and provide support as they take the small steps towards reaching those goals.

Still have concerns about reaching out for support…

What happens in the first appointment?

One obstacle to seeking the support of a counselor, is the uncertainty of what happens at your appointment. This sometimes makes the therapeutic process feel mysterious or uncertain to clients who previously have not sought out services. The first appointment allows the opportunity for the therapist to ask you questions about your previous life experiences, current challenges impacting your functioning as well as motivations for seeking support right now. This helps to build trust and rapport as you establish an alliance with the provider while taking pressure off you to do all the talking. You also have the opportunity to ask questions of the counselor and start establishing therapeutic goals.

How will therapy help and why do I need it?

Therapy provides the opportunity to establish a helping relationship between you and a neutral, unbiased third party. This unique relationship allows the therapist to provide support and validation while also challenging you about patterns of thinking and behavior. Often people are intimidated by seeking support based on the idea that a therapist will “psychoanalyze" them and focus on their flaws or faults. Instead, the purpose of therapy is for your counselor to provide a different perspective for you, which may mean suggesting a theory or idea on how something impacted or effected you. The therapist is not an expert on you, that is your job. These reflections and questions are intended to help people gain insight and increase self-awareness that lead to new connections not previously realized. From this insight, therapy can help you become more intentional with the ways you spend your time and goals you put time and energy towards as you move forward into adulthood.

It’s too expensive and takes too much time.

Many people are unaware of the coverage that their medical insurance can provide when seeking support with mental health services. Emerge is in network with BlueCross BlueShield insurance plans and can also support clients with navigating out of network benefits with other insurance plans. We are intentional about our transparent pricing and take time to be sure that each client understands the coverage they are eligible for through insurance benefits. Additionally, we understand there are many things on your to do list, thus offer flexible appointment times to fit the busiest of schedules.
