Navigating The Process: College Counseling Overview

Finding Your Fit

With over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S., the task of narrowing down your college search to just 8-10 schools that you would be interested in attending can be a daunting one indeed; and that’s just if you’re looking at schools here in the U.S.. Starting by exploring what’s important to you as a student and family, individually, Emerge is here to help you develop your perfect college list. Providing you with the tools to organize your research and ask questions which get at your core needs and wants from a school, we will see your college search through to the end. With a vast knowledge of the college landscape, offerings, and communities across the states, our college counselors are able to help craft lists which will speak to your unique self.

Telling Your Story

With college admission offices looking for the best students for their campus, this often leads them to encourage students to stand-out with rigorous courses-loads and leadership roles in extracurricular activities. When students begin the college application, colleges ask students to bare their accomplishments and standings for all to see so that they can deem them as worthy of a place in their class. Topping off the application with a personal statement, students are asked to share why, after having accomplished all that they have, they think they are a good fit for the campus community. Students are often asked to navigate this ever-changing and evolving world of college admissions with limited guidance. This entire process can create a strong sense of anxiety and stress in many students’ homes. All of which we shelter behind conversations about acceptance.

With professionals who have worked in selective college admissions, Emerge Mental Health and College Counseling seeks to set a plan for success as you define it and celebrate when we achieve those goals. Understanding what colleges and universities are looking for in applicants and having been in the room where these decisions are made, we can help throughout the entire process of the application. Whether you’re not sure what courses you should be taking to make yourself competitive, or you need help with finding your why and sharing that in your essay, we are prepared to demystify the college application process.

Making Your Selection

After a successful college application process, students will have options. With acceptance letters, financial aid awards, scholarships and program offerings, often navigating this last and very important step of selecting at which college to confirm your spot, can be as overwhelming as narrowing down your search in the first place. With the many twists and turns in the selection process, balancing academic-fit, personal-fit, and financial-fit can be daunting. Having assisted many students through these final steps as the national decision day of May 1st looms, professionals at Emerge are available to help weigh all options and explore campus resources and offerings so that students and families feel confident in their final decision.
